MIXED REALITY BRINGS TOGETHER REAL WORLD AND DIGITAL ELEMENTS IN TO ONE & VIRTUAL PRODUCTION
Mixed Reality (MR) is a new term that saw a rise in popularity with the launch of Microsoft Hololens’ first prototype in 2016.
The approaches to MR vary in two distinct ways: a person can either be inserted into a virtual world (also called Virtual Production Set), or they can have virtual elements incorporated in their perception.
Incorporating virtual elements into a person’s perception requires the use of specialized headsets, like Hololens and Magic Leap. This takes the basic principles of AR simulations and advances them beyond mobile devices. The special state-of-the-art headsets include additional sensors and processing power. The device enables gesture-controlled interactions with the environment and control points of the AR graphics attached virtually to the surrounding physical space.
To insert the person into a virtual world can require green screen space and extra development in unity so the camera can “cut off” the real environment and replace in with a virtual model. It can provide a great activation and social mirror for guests who are not involved in the MR experience as it is viewable external to the user. Video can even be recorded and shared on social media after the event. One example of this style of MR is Vostok VR’s virtual tour of the Mediacorp Campus. This way of capturing sometimes called Virtual Production. Virtual Production is a new emerging technology that uses a suite of software tools to combine live action footage and computer graphics in real-time. Filmmakers and contributors across multiple studios can deliver feedback across digital or physical environments where cast members are physically working on set. In 2021 Vostok VR team was approached by local TV company who wanted to create a TV show using Virtual Production set. Instead of flying talents to remote location (thus increasing project budget for travel and all travel-related costs & risks amid COVID-19) the team decided to create Virtual Background for their performance. Just like planning a game, this requires a high level of project management. Filmmakers need to figure out spatial reference of characters, location of the assets, and how the camera angles and lenses will be set by the director of photography (DP) and their team.
